Dogs Attract More Charitable Giving Than Any Other Animal

New data released by leading not-for-profit social enterprise, Giveacar, show that dogs inspire more charitable donations than any other animal. Nearly a quarter (23.25%) of donations made through Giveacar to animal-based charities were to those that support dogs. Charities that support horses received around nearly 12% and those that support cats received nearly 11%. Overall, donations to animal-based charities accounted for 13% of the total, with the leading causes being medical charities, attracting nearly 46% of the total, and children and families charities (17.64%).

How many dogs in the UK?

Care to start your day with some useful statistic figures?

UK Domestic Dog Population Is Larger Than Originally Thought

A new study has found that the UK domestic cat and dog population is larger than previously reported by industry figures. Cats and dogs are one of the most popular pets in the UK but it has been over 20 years since domestic cat and dog population estimates in the UK have been published in scientific peer-reviewed journals.

The paper published in the Veterinary Record by Dr Jane Murray in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Science at Bristol University and colleagues, aimed to estimate the number of UK domestic cats and dogs and identify the characteristics of their owners. The figures are also useful to the animal health and welfare professions, including rescue charities, which can use these and future estimates to assess population changes.

Is your dog fat?

Interesting to see humans are not the only ones with obesity in the UK…

Shock New Figures Suggest 2.9m British Dogs Are Fat

The impact of expanding waistlines on the health of our nation’s pets is a huge concern for the UK’s leading veterinary charity, PDSA, with around 2.9 million dogs and 3 million cats* in the UK battling the bulge. But worryingly, 84% of owners believe their pets are the right weight, which suggests there is a widespread misunderstanding about what a healthy weight for pets should be.

Cats for prisoners

Americans have some interesting ideas about law sometimes. It is not so long ago we posted article about dogs being used to calm victims of crime in courtrooms, today we hear about cats sheltering with prisoners. On the bright side, prison cant be much worse for the cat than shelter, I suppose.

Want to adopt a cat or dog? If you happen to live in London, I could suggest the Wood Green Animals Charity, in the meantime, check out how is our american cat doing in the prison…

Bunking with cats, inmates learn value of teamwork

By NIGEL DUARA | Associated Press – Thu, May 3, 2012

YACOLT, Wash. (AP) — When Princess Natalie was still a kitten, before she was prison royalty, she was left in a cage with another cat for months. They were fed, given water and not much else.
Natalie became afraid of people and other cats. When she was adopted, she hissed at her owners, made a mess in their home and bit them at every opportunity. They gave up and handed her over to a shelter.
Natalie was scheduled to be put down. But then a program at a minimum-security prison in Washington state presented another option: Hand her over to a pair of inmates.
The six-year-old, long-haired black cat would live in their cell, get outside time daily and learn manners. For Joey Contreras, 28, Natalie’s arrival in March was his ticket out of a 40-man dorm and into a two-person cell with a door.

One bloody lucky horse

Wood Green horses praised for saving a life

A pair of horses at Wood Green, The Animals Charity have been praised for helping to save the life of a fellow equine.

Resident horses Cherokee and Bilbo at the Charity’s Godmanchester Centre were among six horses to donate blood and enable critically ill Germaine to make a full recovery.

The two-year-old filly was admitted to Fellowes Farm Equine Clinic with sudden onset, severe diarrhoea. Despite intensive care and treatment her condition continued to deteriorate with the protein levels in her blood falling to dangerously low levels.

Without these essential proteins, blood circulation could not function as normal and it was decided Germaine would need a blood transfusion.

Veterinary Surgeon Stuart Thorne said: “We were able to find six horses to give blood on separate occasions. These transfusions helped support her during her time of crisis and if it were not for these generous donations it is unlikely she would have made it through this difficult time.”

Head of Veterinary Services at Wood Green, Vanessa Cunningham said: “We’ve helped in cases of dogs and cats requiring blood transfusions in the past but this is our first equine case. It’s really great that the outcome was positive and that Germaine is doing so well.”

Stuart added: “Unlike in human medicine, there are no large blood banks for horses. Transfusions are often required quickly so time is of the essence. We cannot stress enough our gratitude to these horses and their owners.”

Cherokee and Bilbo, who live at Wood Green permanently and are used by the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), were presented with certificates.

If you would like to discuss blood transfusions further or would like to join Fellowes Farm’s donor list, please call 01487 773333.
